home stallions reference sires performance horses about us links

We are so pleased that these owners of HQH horses are as proud of them as we are!

“Just wanted to let you know that Buddy is doing great... even with a total of 3 rides in the 6 weeks since we brough him home (it's been COLD up here in the North Country!) he's done everything I've asked -- arena work, riding down the road, even being my 4 year old's new favorite leadline horse - not bad for being a 4 year old himself. But since he's our fourth Hockenson horse in as many years, of course we knew what we were getting! Like JJ, Blaze and Mobe, Buddy is smart, athletic, good-looking, well-conformed and lvoes to work. We get so many compliments... from friends on our drill team to strangers at shows or on the trail, I can't even count the number of times I've heard "I want your horse!" When we're ready for another good all-around gelding, we'll definitely be back... so keep doing what you're doing! And I'll make sure to send a picture of our "all-HQ" four-in-a-line barrel team this summer!

“Thank you so much for your time and patience with me through this process. She is SMART, CALM, AND SO VERY EASY TO WORK WITH EVEN IN A TOTALLLY different environment.  I started in the round pen, moved to a medium pen and in 45 minutes was in the large arena.  WHATEVER YOU ARE DOING, KEEP IT UP, she is a joy and the kids think she is beautiful too!!!!!  If I ever have a friend looking for a great horse, I will send them your way!!  Thank you!”

Lisa (Nebraska)

“This past year I have worked with several Hockenson bred prospects.  These young horses are athletic, highly trainable and have work ethics that don’t quit.  They are naturally well-mannered on the ground and have personalities that make ‘em fun to handle.  If a buyer is looking for a rope, trail, or even reining prospect, I encourage them to start at Melanie and Reid’s place.  The Hockensons are breeding good-looking, well-conformed babies with great hearts and minds, and are offering them at realistic prices for today’s market.”

Elise (Iowa)

“I purchased my first Hockenson Quarter horse in May of 2013.  She has a great mind, tons of natural talent and has been an easy horse to work with.  I liked her so much that I went back in September of 2013 and purchased a second horse from them and this horse has proven to have the same qualities.  Melanie and Reid have been amazing to work with as well.  The nicest people you will ever meet!”

Stephanie (Iowa) & HQ Docs Candy Bar

“We were very pleased with the dealings and honesty from you and Melanie and the extra work you did with Candy before I got her.  She is a very enjoyable and friendly horse to be around and so far we have gotten along fine, she has been to the Black Hills twice and several times to Forestville, I just want spring to come because I want to start riding, I hope we can meet up sometime this year so you can see Candy.”

"I have owned Big Boy now for 3 months and I wanted to let you know that he is everything you advertised him to be and more.  He is one of the most willing, gentle, and intelligent horses we have ever had, and no matter where I have taken him I have comments on what a beautiful horse he is.  I also wanted to thank you for being so great to work with during the sale due to the distance we had to travel to pick him up.  I really appreciate you going the extra mile to make it possible to be able to purchase him.  If we are ever in the market for another horse, we will be giving you a call.  If you and Melanie are ever in the area, stop by to see what a wonderful mountain horse Big Boy has turned out to be."

Mary (Wyoming) & HQ Leos Gold Rush

"We purchased 2 yearling fillies out of Jack in 2014. One was purchased from Reid and Melanie in March as a barrel horse prospect. We were so impressed by her personality that we came back to purchase another offspring out of Jack in July. Jacks offspring have great confirmation and excellent personalities. Both fillies are easy learners and already show great athletic ability. I would recommend Hockenson Quarter horses to anyone looking for a great horse. Reid and Melanie were wonderful to work with and have developed a great breeding program."

"The description of “Yellow Dog” Melanie and Reid Hockenson posted on their ad was everything I had on my list for what I was looking for, the golden palomino color, well, that was an added plus that just caught my eye, as that has been a dream color for a quarter horse since I was kid who watched  Roy Rogers  and Trigger.  After meeting Melanie and Reid, they are the real deal!  Honest, friendly and so enjoyable to visit, the morning flew well into the afternoon as they took their time showing me every aspect and capability of this horse.  What they say and post about their horses is the truth.  The result, I purchased “Yellow Dog” that same day and took him home.  I have been trail riding him for more than 3 months now.  He is quite, calm, respectful and a true gentleman out on trail and at home.  He crosses water, passes deer and turkeys without  flight or spook.  He is the most self-confident peaceful minded horse I’ve ever owned.  I found the experience with Hockenson Quarter Horses so easy and pleasurable, they truly know how to breed  and train quarter horses with horse sense,  great minds using pedigree experience.  There are so many other breeds out there on the trails, and I’ve even tried a few of them.  “Yellow Dog’s “ foundation bloodline, training, soundness and calm disposition has restored my love for this breed.  I have found my golden palomino to take me well into my golden years!  I would recommend Hockenson Quarters Horses to anyone looking for a truly great performance quarter horse.  Thank you Melanie and Reid. "
